BACKGROUND

For many people, work is more than a paycheck. Work provides a social role and identity and is considered an essential source of purpose in life. In retirement, people lose the roles, goals, and structure provided by work, which can create an existential vacuum and cause people to feel aimless and lost. This lack of purpose may lead to a decline in mental, physical, and cognitive health, leading them to feel disconnected from their communities with decreased longevity.

Mirthwood is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of native plants on Vancouver Island, promoting individual and community well-being for those in retirement.

THE APPROACH

As the designer, I conceptualized and created a visual identity for the non-profit organization, translating its values and objectives into a cohesive and engaging user experience. This involved crafting the brand, designing materials, and developing a website to communicate the organization’s missions, primarily acting as a space to purchase subscription boxes and workshops, and staying updated on all of the garden’s events.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design began with extensive research into the lack of fulfillment and community in the daily lives of retirees. Data collected through surveys and interviews highlighted the need for a specific place retirees can go to regain a sense of community, where accessibility in all forms and stages are taken into account. Creating a journey map and storyboards helped helped visualize the user experience, while prototypes and iterations refined the design before implementation.

THE RESULT

Mirthwood now offers retirees an opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that promote individual well-being and community connection. By providing DIY Gardening Kits, workshops, and volunteer opportunities, Mirthwood empowers retirees to rediscover purpose and fulfillment in retirement while contributing to the conservation of native plants on Vancouver Island.
